MRV initially worked with the Foraker Group to conceptually study and cost estimate a Visitor Center for Soldotna. MRV Architects has assisted on this project through Programming, Conceptual Design, and Schematic Design. The overall size totals 9,800 sf. with an 1,800 sf. alternative including a large primary meeting and ballroom space, smaller break-out spaces, including an active lobby/foyer event space, offices for the Chamber of Commerce, and a visitor’s center. The project design is paused, pending additional construction funding. Our design team includes PDC for all major consultant roles. The estimated construction value is $8.6 million.
The complicated site required a lower level parking area to connect with the higher Soldotna Creek Park. The solution was to bridge the levels with a unique building that celebrates views of the iconic Kenai River. To reduce costs a simple box was created, however, extra care was taken to celebrate the river side of the building. The circulation spine celebrates the wonderful south facing views. Overhangs and mullions are specifically designed to harness southern winter sun and block out summer solar heat. Multiple conference size options were studied, with the design allowing for future expansion.
