Mt. Eccles Elementary School

-CEFPI Len Mackler Award

This comprehensive two-part project saw the complete renovation of the existing school structure, and the addition of a full gymnasium. Several previous additions and modifications to this 1950s school had left it with a confusing entrance far from the public spaces and office. The focus of the reno/addition is to remedy this with an entrance that opens directly to the public spaces of the Commons, Stage, and Gym with easy supervision from the Office. Realizing that the sloping site -once seen as an impediment to recess- could be used as an advantage, the design team extended the playground up and over the gym roof. The renovation of the existing portions of the school will focus on energy efficiency with a greatly increased thermal envelope.

As is often the case, MRV’s involvement in the Mt. Eccles project has gone well beyond design work. In addition to the usual architectural and project management duties, MRV assisted the City and School District during the project's Bond Election with the creation of promotional materials, and during the Bid Process with administrative support.
